England's search for a new Test head coach has gathered pace following Brendon McCullum's departure from the red-ball setup, and former India head coach Rahul Dravid has emerged as one of the leading contenders for the role. While McCullum will continue overseeing England's white-ball teams, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is now evaluating several high-profile candidates to guide the Test side into a new era ahead of next year's Ashes.

Rahul Dravid among frontrunners for England's Test coaching role
According to reports, Dravid is viewed as one of the strongest candidates to succeed McCullum thanks to his proven track record in international cricket and his meticulous approach to coaching.
The former India head coach guided the Men in Blue to the 2024 T20 World Cup title and also oversaw an impressive run in Test cricket, including India's appearance in the 2023 World Test Championship final. His reputation for discipline, preparation, and technical excellence has made him an attractive option for England as the team looks to rebuild following a disappointing run of results.
The report added that Dravid is not keen on taking up a full-time coaching assignment. However, England's Test-only role could prove appealing as it would allow him extended periods at home while also allowing him to contribute to the longest format of the game. The ECB is expected to assess his interest before finalising its decision.
Several decorated coaches in contention after McCullum's exit
Dravid is not the only renowned name being linked with the vacancy. Former England coach Andy Flower, who recently guided Royal Challengers Bengaluru to back-to-back IPL titles, is also considered a strong contender after previously leading England to the 2010 T20 World Cup, three Ashes victories and the No. 1 Test ranking.
Other candidates reportedly under consideration include Richard Dawson, Kumar Sangakkara, Mike Hesson, and former Australia coach Justin Langer, all of whom bring significant international and franchise coaching experience.

Brendon McCullum's departure comes after England's 2-1 Test series defeat to New Zealand, while the retirement of long-time captain Ben Stokes has further accelerated the need for a fresh direction in the team's red-ball setup. With the Ashes looming next year, England's next appointment is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the team's future.
