Widely celebrated as Sri Lanka's greatest-ever pace bowler, the 52-year-old spent the inaugural three IPL seasons (2008–2010) spearheading the Deccan Chargers attack, amassing an impressive international record of 355 Test and 400 ODI scalps along the way. His transition into high-level coaching features extensive work with the Sri Lankan national squad, marked by distinct tenures from 2012 to 2015, 2016 to 2017, and again in 2022, punctuated by a brief 2021 appointment that ended almost immediately due to a contract disagreement. Overseas, his international resume boasts an early role as a New Zealand bowling consultant and a stint assisting Ireland during the 2016 World T20.

The move also marks Amit Mishra's coaching debut in the IPL, following an extensive playing career across four franchises: Delhi Daredevils (now Capitals), Deccan Chargers, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Lucknow Super Giants. The 42-year-old leg-spinner made his final IPL appearance for LSG in 2024 before announcing his retirement in September 2025. Mishra made an immediate splash during the tournament's inaugural 2008 edition by claiming a five-wicket haul that featured the first of his three career IPL hat-tricks, a record that still stands. Renowned for his classic, loopy leg-breaks, he maintained an extraordinarily consistent tournament presence, featuring in every season from 2008 to 2024 (except 2022) to finish with 174 wickets from 162 matches at an economy rate of 7.37.  While the franchise has not formally announced its revamped leadership group—which includes Sourav Ganguly and Yuvraj Singh, both Vaas and Mishra are already in New Delhi overseeing training sessions at the team’s academy. The complete overhaul of the support staff stems from a joint ownership agreement established after IPL 2024 between GMR Sports India Pvt Ltd and Jindal South West (JSW) Sports, under which management responsibilities rotate between the two entities in two-year cycles. That arrangement saw GMR oversee operational control for the 2025 and 2026 seasons, appointing Venugopal Rao as director of cricket alongside Hemang Badani as head coach and Munaf Patel as bowling coach.

Notably, DC's campaign in IPL 2026 followed a familiar, disappointing script. After a promising start, the team lost momentum mid-season and ultimately crashed out during the group stage, missing the playoffs once again.

They concluded their 14-match schedule with a balanced split of seven wins and seven losses, gathering 14 points to finish sixth overall—behind playoff contenders Punjab Kings, Rajasthan Royals, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Gujarat Titans, and Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
