In a series of underwhelming events, a long-awaited clash between Messi's Argentina and Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal in the quarterfinals. Portugal played a 0-0 draw against Colombia in their final group-stage game. Colombia finished atop Group K after restricting Portugal for a draw. That outcome ensured that Argentina and Portugal will not face each other in the quarterfinals, as both of the sides were placed on opposites sides of the draw until the final.

If both footballing icons are to meet on the World Cup stage for the very first time, they will now have to play their respective sides all the way to the title clash. A total of 16 countries saw their campaigns at the FIFA World Cup 2026 to an end. The teams eliminated before the knockout rounds are South Korea, Czech Republic, Qatar, Scotland, Haiti, Turkey, Curacao, Tunisia, Iran, New Zealand, Uruguay, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Jordan, Uzbekistan and Panama.
