Lionel Messi scripted another piece of FIFA World Cup history with a brilliant free-kick against Jordan.

The Argentine captain reached a new career milestone while continuing his impressive scoring run at the 2026 World Cup.

Lionel Messi added yet another chapter to his remarkable FIFA World Cup legacy after scoring a stunning free-kick during Argentina's 3-1 victory over Jordan in their final Group J fixture. The Argentine captain came off the bench to produce a moment of brilliance that not only helped his side maintain momentum heading into the knockout stage but also saw him break another World Cup record.

Already through to the Round of 32 as group winners, Argentina rested several regular starters, with head coach Lionel Scaloni introducing Messi in the second half. The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner wasted little time in making his presence felt.

Lionel Messi sets another FIFA World Cup record

Messi's memorable strike came from a direct free-kick after Jordan goalkeeper Yazeed Abulaila spent considerable time organizing his defensive wall. While many expected the Argentine icon to curl his effort over the wall, Messi instead caught everyone by surprise with a precise low finish into the bottom corner, leaving the goalkeeper rooted to the spot.

The goal carried historic significance beyond its quality.

It was Messi's second direct free-kick goal in FIFA World Cup history, with his first coming against Nigeria during the 2014 edition in Brazil. More importantly, the strike took his tally to 19 goals in World Cup finals, extending his record as the competition's all-time leading scorer.

The Inter Miami forward also became the first player ever to score in seven consecutive FIFA World Cup matches, adding another unique milestone to his already unmatched international career.

Argentina build momentum before knockout stage

Messi's latest goal also strengthened his position in the race for the tournament's Golden Boot, taking his tally to six goals at the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Argentina had already secured top spot in Group J before facing Jordan, ensuring qualification for the Round of 32. Scaloni opted to rotate his squad ahead of the knockout stages, but Messi's second-half cameo once again underlined his ability to influence matches regardless of the circumstances.
