Invincibles legend highlights mentality and leadership as key factors.

Arsenal legend Gilberto Silva has strongly rejected the growing narrative surrounding the club’s recent title near-misses, dismissing claims that the current squad lacks the mentality required to go all the way.

As Mikel Arteta’s side continues to battle at the top end of the Premier League, criticism has intensified, with some branding the Gunners as “bottlers.” Silva, however, has firmly pushed back against that characterization, insisting it fails to reflect the reality of elite-level competition.

Silva defends Arsenal’s mentality

Drawing from his own experience as part of Arsenal’s legendary 2003-04 “Invincibles” squad, Silva emphasized that success at the highest level is built on resilience and belief, not simplistic labels.

“No one accepted losing, much less losing in a silly way. Defeat was not easily tolerated. If the other team were to beat us, they had to perform at an exceptionally high level. In many matches where we fell behind, the players didn't just accept it as a matter of course,” Silva explained.

His comments highlight the mentality that defined that historic team—one that went unbeaten throughout the season and set a benchmark for future generations.

Lessons from the invincibles era

Silva also pointed to the unwavering belief that drove the squad, which featured icons like Thierry Henry and Patrick Vieira.

“We believed until the very end and did everything we could to turn the situation around.”

That mindset, according to Silva, is often overlooked when evaluating modern teams, particularly in an era where expectations are magnified and patience is limited.

Wenger’s influence still resonates

The former midfielder credited much of that success to the leadership of Arsene Wenger, whose calm yet authoritative approach played a crucial role in shaping the team’s identity.

“[Wenger] was calm. I’ve worked with coaches who were far more agitated when demanding results. But he knew how to manage the group - he knew how to ‘press the right button’ for each player when necessary, whether individually or collectively,” Silva said.

He further revealed the disciplined structure within the squad:

“He conveyed his ideas clearly and simply, making them easy to understand, but he demanded that everyone fulfill their role. After all, if you didn’t do your job, you were out of the team - it was as simple as that. He would put someone else in, and there was no argument.”

Context behind Arsenal’s recent struggles

With Arsenal preparing for another high-stakes clash against Manchester City, Silva’s remarks arrive at a crucial time. The Gunners have come close in recent title races, only to fall short under immense pressure.

However, Silva’s defense suggests that such setbacks should not define the team’s identity. Instead, they reflect the fine margins that separate success from disappointment at the top level.
