Brazilian attacker Raphinha has etched his name in history after equalling Lionel Messi's record for most goals involvements in a single edition of UEFA Champions League season during Barcelona's 4-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund. The Spanish giants were facing Dortmund in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday, April 9.
Raphinha equalled Lionel Messi's record
The former Leeds United star first broke the deadlock in the 25th minute after he nudged in Pau Cubarsi's assist. Rober Lewandowski stepped in the 48th minute after he scored from a header and made it 2-0. Not just this, he even doubled his tally in the 66th minute. Raphinha then made an assist which young sensation Lamine Yamal took advantage of and netted for a goal in the 77th minute.
With an exceptional performance in the first leg during the clash against Dortmund, Raphinha had 12 goals and seven assists to his name in the 11 games in the 2024-25 UEFA Champions League. With 19 goal contributions, he has now equalled Lionel Messi's record from the 2011-12 season.
During that season, Messi had 14 goals and five assists to his name in the 11 games that he played. Not just this, Raphinha will now look to go after Cristiano Ronaldo's record of 21 goal involvements, which he registered during the 2013-14 season for Real Madrid.
Hansi Flick's side will now visit Signal Iduna Park on Tuesday, April 15 for the second leg as they have a four goal advantage.
Raphinha praised two other Barcelona teammates
After their 4-0 victory over Dortmund, Raphinha lauded two of his teammates in the form of Lewandowski and Yamal. He said that he enjoy playing with high level players and had an understanding with both of them.
I love playing with high-level players, Lamine (Yamal), Robert (Lewandowski) and me understand each other very well. This is very important, and I hope to continue putting up spectacular numbers.
As all three attackers scored in the first leg against Dortmund, Barcelona are clear favorites to progress to the semifinals. If they hold on to their 4-0 lead, then they will reach the semis for the first time since 2018-19.
