Bayern Munich reportedly explored the possibility of signing Arsenal winger Gabriel Martinelli in the summer transfer window before ultimately completing a move for Luis Diaz from Liverpool. According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the Bundesliga champions held discussions with Martinelli’s representatives, viewing him as a serious option to strengthen their wide areas.
The German side initially evaluated a deal in the region of €30–35 million (£26m/$35m–£30m/$41m). However, Arsenal made their stance clear: Martinelli was not for sale. The 24-year-old is considered a central figure in Mikel Arteta’s long-term project, and the club hierarchy had no intention of entertaining offers at that valuation.
Arsenal’s stance and Martinelli’s loyalty
Romano revealed that Bayern’s enquiry never progressed beyond the early stages due to both Arsenal’s firm position and Martinelli’s own commitment to the club. The Brazilian, unlike many modern players who push for blockbuster exits, showed no signs of wanting to leave North London.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano explained:
"Another player that was considered as a target by Bayern for the winger position is Gabriel Martinelli. Gabriel Martinelli was one of the targets. Bayern spoke to the agents of Gabriel Martinelli. It was a positive conversation, but Gabriel Martinelli is very happy at Arsenal, and Arsenal were showing no intention of accepting anything close to 30, 35 million euros for Gabriel Martinelli."
Romano further added:
"For them, the player is worth way more, and this is why the negotiation never advanced. But Gabriel Martinelli was a serious target for Bayern at the beginning of the summer transfer window. Then again, it didn't evolve because of financial reasons, and also because Martinelli feels very comfortable at Arsenal."
Why Bayern turned to Diaz
With Arsenal shutting down any possibility of a transfer, Bayern eventually turned their attention to Liverpool winger Luis Diaz, completing the signing later in the window. The Colombian became the more realistic option given his availability, while Martinelli remained firmly committed to the Gunners’ ongoing project.
Martinelli central to Arteta’s vision
The timing of Bayern’s interest coincided with Arsenal strengthening their forward line through the arrivals of Eberechi Eze and Noni Madueke. Despite the added competition, Martinelli’s importance has not diminished. His loyalty and impact continue to underline his value to Arteta’s squad as they aim to compete on multiple fronts this season.
