FIFA is considering expanding the teams taking part in the World Cup for the 2020 tournament. FIFA president Gianni Infantino has confirmed that plans for expanding the men's World Cup to 64 teams will be seriously assessed following the ongoing 2026 tournament, describing the event as one that must be "for the whole world."

Speaking to Swiss broadcaster Bluewin, Infantino said:

“It (a 64-team tournament) is definitely an issue that will be examined and discussed in the relevant committees after this World Cup.”

Infantino highlighted the success of the newly expanded 48-team format in 2026, noting strong performances from smaller nations including nine out of 10 African teams advancing to the knockout stages. He argued that further expansion would give more countries the incentive to develop their football infrastructure and allow every nation to dream of qualifying.

FIFA's council will ultimately decide on any expansion after evaluating the 2026 tournament. For now, the discussion remains open as football's governing body weighs inclusion against tradition and practicality.

Meanwhile, the 2026 tournament has reached the semifinal stage. France is set to face Spain while the defending champions, Argentina, will face England for a place in the final. Lionel Messi will attempt to defend the title, something that Maradona was not able to do.
