Iran in talks with FIFA to move their World Cup 2026 matches to Mexico from USA after Trump’s safety threat
The Iranian football president, Mehdi Taj, said that the team will not travel to America following the safety concerns after Trump’s comments. He said, as posted by the country's embassy in Mexico:
“When Trump has explicitly stated that he cannot ensure the security of the Iranian national team, we will certainly not travel to America.”
Taj added:
"We are currently negotiating with FIFA to hold Iran's matches in the World Cup in Mexico.”
It comes after Trump stated that the Iranian team is welcome in the country, but he believes it may not be safe for the players. It was after Iranian Sports Minister Ahmad Donyamali said that the country cannot participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Meanwhile, the United States is set to co-host the international competition held once every four years, alongside Mexico and Canada. It will feature 104 matches, beginning at Mexico City Stadium on June 11 and culminating at New York New Jersey Stadium with the final on 19 July.
