Xabi Alonso’s sudden sacking has taken over the internet. Real Madrid lost the Supercopa title to the arch-rivals FC Barcelona with a score of 2-3, and what made it worse was the head coach’s departure. Things did not go well with the former player of the club who was destined to succeed as a manager.
His immediate sacking, which the club described as a mutual agreement, has become the talk of the football world. Meanwhile, former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was quizzed about the situation, and he has a clear message for the 15-time UEFA Champions League winners.
Jürgen Klopp’s clear message to Real Madrid over vacancy after Xabi Alonso's sacking
Klopp was asked about Alonso’s shock departure on a live television broadcast and whether he had been approached by the Spanish giants. He told ServusTV On:
"Yes, there were definitely a few people who felt they had to contact me directly about [the Real Madrid job].”
The 58-year-old then went on to say:
“First of all, I think it’s another sign that something isn’t quite right there at the moment. This has absolutely nothing to do with me, and it didn’t trigger anything for me either.”
The former Liverpool boss continued:
"I was surprised, that’s true, genuinely surprised. Then a few people messaged me, and I replied with various emojis.”
Klopp talked about what it's like to be a Real Madrid manager and the pressure on the coach. He then voiced his opinion on how a manager like Alonso, who has proved himself at Bayer Leverkusen, can be fired just in six months:
“It shows a few things.”
Klopp also stated how the expectations for the coach at Real Madrid are “enormous.” Alonso began his senior managerial career at Leverkusen, and the football world is well known about what he did with the Bundesliga side. He led the side to a Bundesliga title, with the club going unbeaten the whole season.
Meanwhile, Alonso has been immediately replaced by former team-mate Alvaro Arbeloa, who has been promoted from Madrid’s Castilla side. However, the length of the contract is not known as of now.
