This performance saw him tie Gonzalo Higuain, who previously held the record for the most goal contributions for the Herons. However, Messi has managed this feat in just 28 regular-season games, a strikingly shorter span compared to Higuain's 67 appearances.
A record in sight
With his performance against the Union, Messi is now poised to break Higuain’s record. A goal or an assist against Toronto FC this Sunday would push Messi ahead in the all-time goal contributions category for Inter Miami.
The match is crucial for the Herons as they face a Toronto FC side that has been struggling this season. However, Messi might play limited minutes, with a more significant fixture against LAFC looming midweek in the Concacaf Champions Cup quarterfinals.
Higuain’s legacy and Messi’s impact
Gonzalo Higuain, who played alongside Messi for the Argentina national team, was one of the original stars brought in to help elevate Inter Miami during its early struggles in MLS. The veteran forward led the team in scoring for two seasons, with 12 goals in 2021 and 16 in 2022, and played a pivotal role in guiding the club to its first-ever MLS Cup playoff appearance in 2022.

In addition to his impending record for most goal contributions, Messi has already established himself as the all-time leader in assists for the club with 20. He also needs just seven more goals to surpass Higuain’s total and become Inter Miami’s all-time leading scorer.
Earlier this year, Messi achieved another remarkable feat by becoming the fastest player in MLS history to reach 40 goal contributions. He achieved this in just 26 regular-season games, accumulating 21 goals and 19 assists.
