Liverpool were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by a struggling Chelsea side at Anfield on Saturday, with Ryan Gravenberch giving the hosts the lead before Enzo Fernández equalized from a free-kick.
The result extended a patchy recent run for Arne Slot’s team and triggered audible boos from sections of the home crowd at full-time, as well as during the second half when the manager substituted promising teenager Rio Ngumoha.
Liverpool boss Arne Slot opens up on Anfield boos after Chelsea loss
In his post-match comments, Slot directly addressed the fan reaction. He said:
“That’s probably got something to do with us not winning.”
The Reds boss added:
“A draw, in the last five games we won three, lost one, and today a draw. That’s not what we want. We want more and we want to win all five.”
The Dutchman defended his decision to withdraw Ngumoha, stating the young player “couldn’t continue,” while acknowledging the supporters’ high expectations at the club.
The draw leaves Liverpool reflecting on what Slot himself described as “not a great season,” with growing fan frustration over both results and the team’s conservative style of play against a Chelsea outfit that had lost their previous six league matches. Some boos were also heard when Ngumoha was replaced.
