Neymar Jr, one of football's most talented and mercurial stars, has once again been sidelined by injury. Brazilian superstar Neymar Jr has been diagnosed with a grade 2 calf injury, sidelining him for two to three weeks and casting serious doubt on his participation in Brazil's opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

According to Fabrizio Romano, tests have confirmed that the Brazilian forward will be out for 2-3 weeks following a new injury sustained while with the national team.

Neymar was cut down by a calf injury during Santos' 3-0 defeat to Cortiba on May 17. As per Brazil's team doctor, Rodrigo Lasmar, he said:

"He reported here at Granja Comary yesterday, underwent all the medical exams, which concluded with an MRI that revealed a Grade 2 calf injury, not just swelling.”

Lamar added:

"He is expected to be cleared to play in two to three weeks."

Recurring issues with his ankles, hamstrings, and other areas have limited his consistency at the highest level in recent years. This latest setback adds to a long list of absences that have frustrated fans, clubs, and the Brazilian national team.

This timing could not be worse for Brazil and head coach Carlo Ancelotti. Neymar is set to miss the pre-tournament friendly matches and faces a real risk of missing Brazil's opening World Cup group stage game against Morocco. The 34-year-old's participation in the tournament itself now hangs in the balance, reigniting debates about his long-term fitness and role in the squad.

The injury means Neymar will miss Brazil's pre-World Cup friendlies against Panama and Egypt. More critically, it puts his availability for the group's opening fixture against Morocco on June 13 in doubt.

A best-case recovery scenario could see him available around June 11, just days before the tournament opener, but medical timelines often err on the side of caution for such injuries, raising the possibility he could miss the first match or even more.

Neymar was included in coach Ancelotti's World Cup squad despite a history of fitness concerns. The decision had already drawn debate, with some fans and analysts calling for in-form alternatives like João Pedro to be given preference.
