Real Madrid have sacked their boss, Xabi Alonso, following the team's Super Copa de Espana loss against Barcelona on Sunday, January 11. Real Madrid broke the news less than 24 hours after the defeat, marking the end of a 7-month stint for the club icon.
Xabi Alonso's clash with Vinicius Jr.
Real Madrid lost this season's first trophy against Barcelona after picking up a 3-2 defeat on Sunday. There were speculations that things were not going well between Xabi and one of Real Madrid's main players - Vinicius Jr. because of the rotation policy that the Spanish tactician had tried to implement in his first season as a manager.
"Real Madrid CF announces that, by mutual agreement between the club and Xabi Alonso, it has been decided to end his time as first team coach. Xabi Alonso will always have the affection and admiration of all Madrid fans because he is a Real Madrid legend and has always represented the values of our club. Real Madrid will always be his home," the club said in a statement.
"Our club thanks Xabi Alonso and his entire technical team for their work and dedication during this time, and wishes them the best of luck in this new stage of their lives," it further added.
Xabi Alonso's mixed bag at Real Madrid
Alonso took over the duties of Real Madrid on June 1 after a successful stint at Bayer Leverkusen, where he clinched a historic domestic double in the 2023-24 season and guided the club to the Europa League final. His initial days at Real Madrid were good, after leading the side to the semi-final of the FIFA Club World Cup, he won 13 of his next 14 games, with the only blemish being a disappointing loss to Atletico Madrid.
However, a loss away at Liverpool on November 4 triggered a downturn in form, with just two wins coming from next fixtures. Although Alonso briefly led the ship with a five-game winning streak, it ultimately failed to persuade the Club's decision-makers that he should be retained going forward.
