Players from both teams stood solemnly on the pitch with heads bowed while the stadium screens displayed the message “Descansen en Paz” (Rest in Peace).

The club’s official account shared an image of the gesture, stating it was held “for the victims of the flood in Nepal and Tibet.” The floods were triggered on 26–27 August 2026 by the collapse of a glacier high in the Himalayas near the Nepal-China border. A massive surge of water, ice, mud and rock tore through river valleys, destroying villages, bridges, roads and hydropower infrastructure.
Official figures in the days that followed put the confirmed death toll in the hundreds, with thousands more reported missing on both sides of the border. Many of those unaccounted for were local residents, workers and foreign tourists and pilgrims. Rescue operations have been severely hampered by the remote mountainous terrain and further risks from unstable debris lakes that formed after the initial surge.
Authorities in both Nepal and China continue search-and-rescue efforts while warning of the potential for secondary flooding. Real Madrid’s tribute forms part of a wider wave of international expressions of solidarity with those affected by one of the region’s most severe natural disasters in recent years.
