The debate over who stands as the greatest footballer of the modern era continues to divide fans worldwide. Former Paris Saint-Germain defender Presnel Kimpembe recently shared his perspective on the iconic rivalry between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, explaining why he believes the Argentine legend holds the edge in the long-running GOAT conversation.

Having played alongside Messi during the forward’s spell at Paris Saint‑Germain from 2021 to 2023, Kimpembe witnessed the World Cup winner’s abilities firsthand. The French defender described the excitement within the squad when Messi arrived in Paris and admitted the moment felt surreal.

Speaking on Just Riadh’s YouTube channel, Kimpembe recalled the atmosphere inside the dressing room when the Argentine icon joined the club.

"The arrival of Leo Messi at PSG? Crazy... crazy... I was like a madman. When he arrives at PSG, you're just so happy. You tell yourself: 'The best player in the world is on my team.'"

Kimpembe picks Messi in football’s greatest rivalry

When asked directly to choose between Messi and Ronaldo, Kimpembe acknowledged the brilliance of both superstars but ultimately sided with the Argentine playmaker. The French international praised Cristiano Ronaldo’s relentless work ethic but highlighted Lionel Messi’s natural ability as the key difference between the two.

"I like both, but I'd say Team Messi. He's too strong. I also like Ronaldo a lot, because you know he's a hard worker. Messi was born with it. Ronaldo was also born with it, but he shaped it in his own way."

For Kimpembe, the contrast between the two legends lies in how their talents manifest on the pitch. While Ronaldo’s rise has been defined by discipline and physical excellence, Messi’s brilliance, according to the defender, appears almost effortless.

First-hand glimpse of Messi’s technical brilliance

Kimpembe also revealed that training sessions offered a clear view of Lionel Messi’s extraordinary skillset. Even simple drills highlighted the Argentine’s awareness and technical superiority, making it nearly impossible for teammates to win the ball from him.

"Messi is too much, brother. When you played rondos with him, the technical quality... you would try to press him but he had already seen everything and would fake you out... it was crazy."

The French defender’s comments add another perspective to football’s most famous debate, one that continues to captivate the sport’s global audience.
