The Liverpool captain opened the scoring for the Oranje in the 51st minute with a powerful header, continuing his reputation as a threat from set-pieces. However, Japan showed impressive resilience, equalising through Nakamura before Kamada struck a late leveller to snatch a point.
Despite the shared spoils, Van Dijk’s leadership at the back and decisive attacking contribution earned him the individual accolade. The Dutch defender was pictured proudly holding the trophy in the traditional orange kit after the match.
The result leaves both teams with work to do in Group F as the tournament progresses. The Netherlands will look to tighten their defence, while Japan will take confidence from their fighting spirit against one of Europe’s strongest sides.
