After a one-year delay, the highly anticipated TGL, the virtual, interactive golf league co-founded by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, was launched on Tuesday. The event marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter in golf, with the inaugural match being held at a brand new, cutting-edge interactive golf facility located near the homes of Woods and McIlroy in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
The SoFi Center: A New Era for Golf
The SoFi Center, designed specifically for TGL, features a massive supersized golf simulator screen paired with a morphing green, creating endless possibilities for course designs. While the building was initially scheduled to open last year, a collapse of the roof due to a power outage and wind storm delayed its unveiling. Now, it’s ready to host the league's debut.
What is TGL?
TGL, short for TMRW Golf League, is a tech-infused golf league backed by TMRW Sports, the company founded by Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, and Mike McCarley. The league aims to combine cutting-edge golf technology with live competition, offering fans a modern twist on traditional golf. In partnership with the PGA Tour, the league will feature a range of innovative elements, including a shot clock, timeouts, and both team and individual match play formats.
TGL's Unique Gameplay Format
The inaugural season will feature six teams, each with four players. Teams will compete in a format of nine holes, starting with 3-on-3 alternate shot golf. Each team member will then play two holes of head-to-head match play, with each hole worth one point. If teams remain tied, the match will go into overtime, where players compete in a closest-to-the-pin challenge until one team emerges victorious.
TGL Scoring System
A point-based system will determine which teams advance to the playoffs at the end of the regular season:
- Win: 2 points
- Overtime loss: 1 point
- Regulation loss: 0 points
In case of a tie in the standings, the team with the most holes won during the season will secure the higher playoff seeding.

How TGL Works: A Blend of Technology and Traditional Golf
TGL introduces a fresh twist to golf by combining virtual golf with traditional gameplay. In the competition, two teams of three players face off on a simulator using a 64-foot by 53-foot screen. The setup includes realistic surfaces like fairways, roughs, and sand, enhancing the virtual experience. Once a ball lands within 50 yards of the hole, players transition to the "Green Zone," a 3,800-square-foot green that can be adjusted for variety, ensuring a unique challenge for every hole.
This integration of technology with physical competition sets TGL apart from traditional formats, offering a dynamic and futuristic experience for both players and viewers alike.
