'Game reached Poland through India...': PM Modi backs Poland for hosting first Kabaddi championship

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi who is currently in Poland he recently addressed the Indian community staying there. He is the first Indian leader to visit Poland in over four decades. PM Modi said that both countries are connected through the game of Kabaddi. He said that the game had reached Poland through India. Poland are hosting the Kabaddi Championship for the first time. 

 

Kabaddi, a thrilling contact sport, has its roots deeply embedded in ancient Indian history. The exact origins are shrouded in myth and legend, but it is believed to have evolved from a traditional rural game called "ambedem" or "ambeida." This game involved capturing and tagging opponents while chanting a rhythmic phrase, similar to the modern-day "kabaddi, kabaddi."

Over time, the game evolved and spread across India, becoming a popular pastime in various regions. Its popularity grew further during the British colonial era, when it was introduced to other parts of the world. Today, Kabaddi is played competitively in many countries, with the Kabaddi World Cup being a major international tournament. The sport's popularity has surged in recent years, thanks to professional leagues and television coverage.

 

"We are connected through the game of Kabaddi as well. This game reached Poland through India and they took it to great heights. Poland is going to host the Kabaddi championship for the first time. I want to wish good luck to their team," the Prime Minister said in his address.

 

The Poland men's national team qualified and played in the 2016 Kabaddi World Cup in Ahmedabad, India, and caused a sensation by defeating the then World Champions Iran in a preliminary group match.
