Ferrari have been issued a stark warning that they could lose Lewis Hamilton less than a year after successfully luring the seven-time world champion away from Mercedes. Hamilton, who is yet to secure a single podium finish in his debut season with the Italian team, has openly expressed dissatisfaction with Ferrari's performance and strategic direction.
Lewis Hamilton urges focus on future amid disappointing start
Despite finishing fourth at the recent British Grand Prix, Hamilton has called for Ferrari to abandon development on their current car and instead shift focus toward next season’s model. His comments come amid growing concerns within the Maranello-based team over internal performance and leadership.
Leadership under scrutiny at Maranello
Team principal Fred Vasseur is reportedly under immense pressure for failing to deliver a competitive car for both Hamilton and teammate Charles Leclerc. Italian outlets including Corriere della Sera have indicated that Vasseur's position is increasingly precarious.
Further complications have arisen with the arrival of Loic Serra, Ferrari’s new technical director who joined from Mercedes alongside Hamilton. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Serra has not lived up to expectations and may also be on the chopping block, sparking rumors of a broader overhaul within the team’s leadership.
Christian Horner rumored in possible Ferrari shake-up
Speculation has intensified around a potential leadership reshuffle involving former Red Bull team boss Christian Horner. Reports suggest Ferrari chairman John Elkann is an admirer and had considered Horner for a top role in 2022 before Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko stepped in.
However, motorsport analyst Will Buxton has warned that bringing Horner into Ferrari could push Hamilton out. Speaking on The Sports Agents podcast, Buxton remarked,
If they replaced Fred with Christian Horner, I don’t think Lewis would be a Ferrari driver for much longer.
Buxton further noted that Alpine may be a more suitable destination for Horner due to his long-standing relationship with Flavio Briatore.
Hamilton dismisses Horner’s comments as “Stirring”
Adding fuel to the speculation, Hamilton previously dismissed rumors of joining Red Bull, suggesting that Horner was the source.
I don't really know where that story has come from. I mean I know it's come from Christian, he told Sky Sports. I think he's just stirring things.
Hamilton added, “[I am not surprised people] drop my name in many conversations because they know it's gonna make waves... it's the perfect thing to do.”
The Belgian Grand Prix will take place on Sunday, July 27th.
