A P3 finish at Suzuka still leaves the Ferrari driver feeling it could have been more.

Ferrari standout Charles Leclerc may have secured a podium at the Japanese Grand Prix, but the Ferrari driver was far from satisfied after a race shaped by misfortune.

Despite crossing the line in third, Leclerc pointed to a poorly timed Safety Car as a decisive moment that altered his race trajectory at Suzuka.

Starting from fourth, Leclerc made an aggressive launch to move ahead of both Mercedes drivers early on. However, the race quickly evolved into a strategic battle, where timing proved crucial.

“A little unlucky” moment shifts momentum

Leclerc’s race took a turn after an early pit stop aimed at covering off rivals. While the move initially seemed proactive, the mid-race Safety Car reshuffled the order, allowing competitors to gain track position.

Reflecting on the turning point, Leclerc said:

“It was a bit of a sweaty one this one. Obviously with the Safety Car we got a little unlucky so from that moment onwards I knew that I was a little bit on the back foot, especially compared to Kimi and Lewis.”

The Ferrari driver suddenly found himself chasing, with track position lost at a critical phase of the race.

Recovery drive limits damage

Despite the setback, Charles Leclerc mounted a strong recovery. Overtakes on key rivals helped him climb back into contention, eventually sealing a podium finish. However, the effort required to regain positions only reinforced the impact of the earlier misfortune.

“But then I was like, let's keep pushing, let's try and keep those tyres and bring them to the end and actually it wasn't that much of a disadvantage as I thought,” he added.

Podium result fails to satisfy Charles Leclerc

While a third-place finish marked another solid result for Ferrari, Leclerc’s reaction highlighted a sense of missed opportunity. The combination of a strong start and competitive pace suggested more was possible without the disruption.

“I'm quite pleased. Of course I'm not over the moon because it's only a P3 but considering everything, we've been quite unlucky with the Safety Car.”

"Pretty terrible weekend in general to get a result like that. But there are some points there so we take them," Monegasque concluded.

The result leaves Charles Leclerc balancing satisfaction with frustration—proof that even a podium can feel underwhelming when circumstances shift the race out of a driver’s control.
