In a huge leap forward, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has formally submitted the Letter of Intent in a bid to host the 2036 edition of Olympics and Paralympic Games in the country.
Sports Tak has learned that the letter of interest was sent to Future Host Commission, International Olympic Committee on October 1.
"Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games in India in 2036 has taken a significant step forward," the source said.
"This monumental opportunity could bring substantial benefits, fostering economic growth, social progress, and youth empowerment across the country," the source added.
Apart from India, there are nine other countries who have expressed interest to host the 2036 edition of the sports extravaganza. The long list of countries includes Mexico, Indonesia, Turkey, Poland, Egypt and South Korea. After receiving all letters of intent, IOC's Future Host Commission will kickstart the selection process. The host will be decided by voting system several years later.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has often expressed his interest to host India's first ever Olympics.
“...Only a few days ago, the Paris Olympics concluded. Very soon, you will witness the Olympics in India too. We are putting in all possible efforts to host the 2036 Olympics,” PM Modi said during his speech in New York a few weeks ago.
Before New York, he talked about hosting the Olympics during his interaction with the athletes on Independence Day.
"India is preparing to host the 2036 Olympics. In this regard, the input from athletes who have played in previous Olympics is very important. You all must have observed and experienced many things. We want to document this and share it with the government so that we don’t miss out on any small details in the preparation for 2036," PM Modi had said.
