Star Indian javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra has departed for Germany to consult with medical experts. The decision comes on the heels of his silver medal win at the Paris Olympics. Chopra will undergo a medical evaluation to determine the need for surgery and will also decide on his participation in the upcoming Diamond League events.
Olympic silver medalist Neeraj Chopra has left for Germany to undergo medical tests, a family source confirmed to PTI. The javelin star is expected to be away for at least a month. Chopra’s departure was also confirmed by Indian Olympic Association sources in Paris.
"Chopra has left for Germany and he will not return to India for another month and a half," a family source told PTI.
"I am not aware of the much of the details, but for sure he will consult a doctor there (Germany)," he added.
Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra has been grappling with a persistent groin injury. Despite the pain, he defied expectations to win the World Championships in 2023. Following his victory at the Paavo Nurmi Games in June, he announced plans to address the issue post-Paris Olympics. The severity of the injury was evident when he was forced to take a month-long break before the Games.
"His team (of coach and physio) will decide whether he will play in the DL Meetings (and the DL Final), according to his condition," the family source said.
After winning a silver in the Olympics with a season's best throw of 89.45m, Chopra had hinted that he would have to undergo surgery on his groin injury, which has been troubling him for the last couple of years. Chopra had revealed that when he was throwing, 60-70 per cent focus was on his injury. He said his doctor had told him to undergo surgery before the World Championships last year but he did not do so in view of the Paris Olympics.
