India's star shuttler Lakshya Sen went down to World no.2 Viktor Axelson in a high-octane semifinal match of the men's singles badminton event at the Paris Olympics 2024 on August 4, Sunday. Viktor Axelson defeated Lakshya Sen in straight games at 20-22, 14-21 in 54 minutes at Court 1 of the La Chappele Arena. Lakshya will now compete in the bronze medal clash where he will be pitted against Lee Zii Jia of Malaysia.

Despite trailing significantly in both games, Axelsen's exceptional defensive skills and ability to read Lakshya's game proved decisive. The Dane's composure and experience ultimately overpowered Lakshya's impressive start and attacking prowess. Lakshya showcased his talent early in the match, dominating the early exchanges with precise shot placement and excellent court coverage. His aggressive play put Axelsen under immense pressure, forcing the defending champion to make errors. Lakshya led 11-9 at the mid-game break.

Lakshya continued to dominate after the mid-game break, extending his lead to 9-15. His ability to vary the pace of his shots, coupled with his wide range, frustrated Axelsen, who struggled to find his rhythm. Desperate to turn the tide, the defending champion increased his intensity, relying on his defensive prowess and powerful smashes to claw his way back into the game. A determined Axelsen recovered to trail 13-17, capitalizing on Lakshya's occasional errors. However, Lakshya responded with renewed vigor, creating two game points at 20-18. In a dramatic turn of events, Axelsen displayed his resilience, winning three consecutive points to take a 21-20 lead. The Dane sealed the first game with a well-executed net shot that forced an unforced error from Lakshya.

 

Lakshya faced immense pressure at the start of the second game after losing the opening set. Despite the setback, he began the game impressively, establishing a commanding 7-0 lead. Lakshya's precise shot placement and ability to push Axelsen to the court's boundaries contributed to his early dominance.

The Dane's resilience and ability to recover from difficult positions allowed him to regain control of the game. Lakshya maintained his patient strategy, avoiding extended rallies and focusing on consistent play. He managed to eke out a narrow one-point lead as the game progressed.

 

Lakshya struggled to maintain his momentum in the second game, as Axelsen dominated the court. Despite his efforts to execute his game plan, Lakshya managed to score only three points in the second half.

Although Lakshya's Olympic journey was cut short in the semifinals, he still has a chance to win a medal. He will face Malaysia's Lee Zii Jia in the bronze medal match. Meanwhile, Viktor Axelsen will compete against Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand for the gold medal.
