Olympic medalist Aman Sehrawat and Antim Panghal have officially booked their spots on the Indian wrestling team for the upcoming 2026 Asian Games.
Aman Sehrawat, Antim Panghal qualify for Asian Games 2026
The two secured their selections by winning their respective categories at the national trials held over the weekend. These trials, which covered all 18 Olympic weight categories across women’s wrestling, men’s freestyle, and Greco-Roman, were split between two venues: the women competed on Saturday at the Indira Gandhi Stadium in New Delhi, while the men's freestyle events took place on Sunday at the Regional Centre in Lucknow.

In the men's freestyle events, 22-year-old Aman Sehrawat—who made history as India’s youngest Olympic medalist at Paris 2024—outclassed Rahul Deswal in the 57kg final. Sehrawat previously secured a bronze medal at the Hangzhou Asian Games three years ago. Joining the lineup is Deepak Punia, a silver medalist in the 86kg division at the 2023 Asian Games. Punia moved up to the 97kg category for these trials, successfully pinning Jonty Gujjar in the final to claim his spot. Additionally, reigning Asian Championship gold medalist Sujeet Kalkal earned the right to represent India in the 65kg division.
The women's 53kg division saw plenty of drama, as Antim Panghal—a bronze medalist from the 2023 Asian Games—defeated Meenakshi Goyat in the final to solidify her place on the continental squad. Interestingly, Goyat had previously beaten Panghal at the Asian Championship trials earlier this year and had also knocked out the returning Vinesh Phogat in the semi-finals before falling to Panghal.

The Indian wrestling contingent will look to build on their previous performance at the 2023 Asian Games, where they took home one silver and five bronze medals. The 2026 Asian Games are scheduled to take place from September 19 to October 4 in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. While the freestyle and women's squads are now set, India's Greco-Roman squad will be announced at a later date.
