India's star shuttler PV Sindhu defeated Japan's Akane Yamaguchi in straight games to lift the Japan Open title. Sindhu displayed a commanding show in the summit clash, securing a 21-17, 21-17 win over the home favorite. With this win, Sindhu etched her name in the history books by becoming the first ever Indian woman to win the prestigious Japan Open title. The final also marked her comeback to the summit clash of a major BWF World Tour event after almost two years. Before this win, her last title came at the Syed Modi International in 2024.

Sindhu's dominating outing

Sindhu enjoyed a stellar run throughout the competition and carried her impressive form into the final against Akane Yamaguchi. Despite trailing 9-11 at one stage in the opening game, Sindhu staged a marvelous comeback, winning 12 of the next 18 points to win the first set 21-17.

The Indian shuttler maintained her grip throughout the second game as well, denying Yamaguchi any chance to seize the game. While the Japanese star tried to fight back, Sindhu remained unfazed and continued to dominate the rallies. She eventually secured the second set by 21-17, wrapping the game in just 50 minutes to secure the Japan Open 2026 title.

Sindhu's en route to the title

PV Sindhu grabbed her berth in the Japan Open final with an semifinal win over China's Olympic champion Chen Yufei. Sindhu edged the opening game 21-19 and was leading 15-10 in the second game when Chen retired due to a hamstring injury, handing the Indian player a place in the final.

Earlier in the tournament, Sindhu reached the semis after receiving a walkover in the quarterfinals. The title win is expected to boost her place in the BWF World Rankings and her confidence for the upcoming 2026 Asian Games, where she will be aiming to add another major medal to her iconic career.
