Weightlifter Raja Muthupandi wins silver medal at CWG 2026 but disappointed to let coach down

India weightlifter Raja Muthupandi won a silver medal in the men's 65 kg category in his debut Commonwealth Games. Muthupandi became third Indian weightlifter to bag a medal in the ongoing games meet in Glasgow, Scotland. Muthupandi lifted a total of 286kg, 126kg in snatch and 160kg in clean and jerk. 

Malaysia's Aznil Bin Bindin Muhamad bagged the gold medal with a record-breaking lift. He lifted a total of 299kg, including 133kg in snatch and 166kg in clean and jerk. It is his third consecutive title win in CWG. 
He attempted 135kg and 170kg as well but wasn't successful.

Papua New Guinea's Morea Baru won the bronze medal with 282kg lift. He lifted 125kg in snatch and 157kg in clean and jerk.

'I didn't perform well' - Muthupandi

In his third attempt, Muthupandi tried to lift 129kg in snatch and 170kg in clean and jerk but couldn't. He dedicated the silver medal to his parents and coach. However, he was disappointed with his performance and letting the coach down. 

“I am certainly disappointed because my coach had placed his trust in me, believing we would put in the full effort to win gold. However, I didn’t perform well. I dedicate this win to my parents and my coach, Vijay Sharma. I will focus on the lessons learned here and concentrate on my training. I will train according to my coach’s instructions and work hard moving forward,” Raja told ANI.

Mirabai wins gold, Rishikanta bags silver

Earlier in the day, India's Chanambam Rishikanta Singh won a silver medal in the men's 60 kg weightlifting event. He lifted 264kg and set a new Games record in snatch but missed out on a gold medal.

Later, India's legendary weightlifter Mirabai Chanu won a gold medal in the women's 48 kg category. She lifted a total of 190kg including a snatch of 85kg and clean and jerk of 105kg. She set the Games record for snatch as well.

So far, India have won four medals at the event. Jhandu Kumar won the bronze medal in men's heavyweight para powerlifting.
