Zagreb Open 2024 Ranking Series is set to kick off from January 10.

All eyes will be on India's star wrestling troika of Aman Sehrawat, Sonam Malik, and Deepak Punia.

Thirteen Indian wrestlers, including Aman Sehrawat, Sonam Malik, and Deepak Punia, will participate in the Zagreb Open 2024 Ranking Series, starting Wednesday, January 10, in Croatia's capital. Aman Sehrawat has earned accolades as a former U-23 world champion and the current Asian champion. Deepak Punia, a Tokyo Olympian, clinched a silver medal at the 2019 world championships. Sonam Malik has been a junior world championships silver medalist.

The trio – Sehrawat, Punia, and Malik – each secured medals at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou. They are set to showcase their skills at the Zagreb Open, particularly in the absence of renowned wrestlers like Tokyo Olympic medalist Bajrang Punia and two-time junior world champion Antim Panghal.

Bajrang Punia is still in recovery, not having resumed training post-thumb surgery, while Antim Panghal, a recent Arjuna Award recipient, missed the trip due to her attendance at the National Sports Awards ceremony in New Delhi on January 9.

Pooja Gehlot, Mansi Ahlawat, and Kiran, all participants in the 2023 Asian Games, will not be competing in the Zagreb meet.

The Zagreb Open wrestling tournament marks the first international event of the year for Indian wrestlers and also serves as the inaugural Ranking Series event on the 2024 United World Wrestling (UWW) calendar.

The Indian delegation includes nine coaches and support staff, along with three referees, led by coach Kuldeep Singh.

In the Greco-Roman category, Sunil Kumar, a bronze medalist from the 2023 Asian Games in the 87kg division, is among the notable wrestlers.

The Indian squad at the Zagreb Open is comprised of five male freestyle wrestlers, two female freestyle wrestlers, and six Greco-Roman wrestlers.
