Daniil Medvedev might have made it to the final of the Australian Open after beating Stefanos Tsitsipas in thrilling four sets, but he lost his cool during the clash. The US Open champion went vintage John McEnroe when he unleashed his anger at the chair umpire in the third set. The highest remaining seed in the tournament shouted at chair umpire Jaume Campistol and directed his attention to Tsitsipas' father who he thought was coaching him in their local language.
“Are you mad? Are you mad? For what? His father can talk every point? Are you stupid? His father can talk every point? His father can talk every point? His father can talk every point?” Medvedev yelled at chair umpire.
“Will you answer my question? Can you answer my question? Can you answer my question, please? Can his father talk every point?
“Oh my god. Oh my god, you are so bad, man.
“How can you be so bad in semi-final of a grand slam? Look at me. I’m talking to you!
“How can these guys be so stupid in a semi-final,” a frustrated Medvedev questioned.
Things got more heated when the 25-year-old Russian went for the change of ends and once again showcased his anger.
“Do you understand Greek? Next time it should be a code violation because he’s speaking Greek.
“If you don’t, you are a - how can I call it - small cat," he said at the changeover.
Apostolos Tsitsipas, father of Stefanos, was attending the match when the incident took place at the midway point of the third set. Both players were at 1-1 in terms of set, but Medvedev was not happy with alleged coaching directions provided by his opponent's father in Greek language.
Medvedev's appeal though didn't go unnoticed as Greek official Eva Asderaki-Moore, placed herself before the Tsitsipas box to monitor any coaching movements.
The coaching effect didn't have any outcome on the result though, as the Russian cruised to the final after winning the third and fourth set. The 25-year-old will now face Rafael Nadal in the final on Sunday. Medvedev's task, like in US Open final, will be to prevent his opponent from winning their 21st major title. Last year, he defeated Novak Djokovic in the final of the US Open.
