Harbhajan Singh has advised Hardik Pandya to bring his all-round game in the IPL 2026

Hardik Pandya will be seen leading the MI pack once again in the upcoming IPL season

Mumbai Indians (MI) are preparing for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season, with a clear objective to secure their sixth title. The franchise is currently seeking to end a five-year trophy drought and reclaim its position as the most successful team in the league's history. To achieve this, former India international and past Mumbai Indians captain Harbhajan Singh opined that the team's success hinges heavily on the captain Hardik Pandya's personal performance and presence.

Hardik Pandya needs to unleash his real Hardik Pandya version in IPL 2026: Harbhajan

While discussing the team's prospects on JioHotstar, Harbhajan Singh highlighted the importance of Pandya's role as an impact player. He urged the all-rounder to lead from the front, suggesting that his ability to influence matches with both bat and ball will be the primary catalyst for the squad's turnaround. By setting a high standard through his own contributions, Harbhajan believes Pandya can inspire the rest of the roster to return to their championship-winning form.

"I think Hardik Pandya needs to unleash his real Hardik Pandya version. He needs to bring his A game to the table. Once he starts playing his A game, not just as a batter but as a bowler as well, it will make a huge difference. We saw him bowl in the T20 World Cup. He was brilliant with the ball. That is what he needs to do in the IPL as well. When a captain leads from the front and shows the way, everyone follows. It will come down to belief. If Hardik and his men believe from day one that they are not just there to compete, but to lift the trophy for the sixth time, things can change very quickly for MI," Harbhajan said.

Harbhajan Singh on MI's batting plan

Pandya’s journey as the captain of Mumbai Indians has been marked by significant transitions and mixed results. He assumed the role in late 2023, taking over from the long-standing leader Rohit Sharma just before the 2024 season. His debut year in charge was particularly difficult, as the franchise finished at the bottom of the table. However, the team showed signs of a turnaround last season, climbing back to the fourth spot and reaching Qualifier 2. Pandya brings a proven track record of leadership to the side, having famously guided the Gujarat Titans to their first IPL title during their inaugural season in 2022.

Regarding team selection for the upcoming season, Harbhajan Singh has expressed doubts about MI’s ability to fit both Ryan Rickelton and Quinton de Kock into the same starting XI. Given that Rohit Sharma is expected to occupy one of the opening slots, Harbhajan believes the management will likely choose between the two South Africans rather than pairing them together. This decision will be a key tactical point as the team looks to balance its overseas slots and capitalize on the local talent available in the top order.

"I don't think the MI team management will make both Quinton de Kock and Ryan Rickelton start in the playing XI together. Only one of these two guys will feature in the starting line-up, and making both of them play will be difficult because MI also have Rohit Sharma at the top. He will be the main opener with either Ryan Rickelton or Quinton de Kock giving him company at the other end. Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma will come in at three and four. So I don't think we will see Quinton de Kock and Ryan Rickelton playing together at the same time," Harbhajan concluded.

MI will take on Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in their IPL 2026 campaign opener on March 29 at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai.
