A fresh chapter could be on the horizon for England's red-ball setup, as Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batting coach Michael Hussey revealed he has been informally sounded out for the batting coach position by incoming Test head coach Stephen Fleming. The appointment of Fleming, who steps in to replace Brendon McCullum following the current Pakistan series, alongside Joe Root's return to the captaincy, signals a major leadership reset ahead of England's upcoming winter tour to South Africa.

Wouldn't say no: Hussey on joining England's coaching set-up

The outreach stems from a deep professional relationship built over nearly fifteen years at CSK, where the duo transitioned from teammates to a successful head coach and batting coach pairing. Speaking to Fox Sports, Hussey acknowledged the casual pitch made by his longtime IPL colleague, clarifying that while no formal agreement has been reached, the proposition remains under consideration as England prepares to usher in its new coaching era.

“There is a lot of different things to consider. My short answer is I would not say no to anything really. It would feel a bit weird – definitely – coaching for England against Australia in an Ashes series, no question,” Hussey said.

The possibility of an Australian icon sitting in the opposition setup for the 2027 Ashes adds a fascinating layer to this potential appointment. While Hussey acknowledged the initial awkwardness of plotting against his own countrymen in cricket's marquee rivalry, he actively left the door open to the opportunity. For the former middle-order star, coaching is about nurturing individual talent rather than flying a national flag, making the prospect of guiding England against Australia far less conflicted than it might seem from the outside.

What will be Hussey's final choice?

Beyond tactical fit, personal life and key relationships will ultimately dictate Hussey's final choice. Balancing prolonged stretches away from home against the chance to reunite with Stephen Fleming remains the central tug-of-war for the 51-year-old. Having already served as a consultant during England's triumphant 2022 T20 World Cup campaign, crossing borders is familiar territory, though he emphasised that any firm decision is still a long way off.

Confidence in Fleming’s leadership runs high for Hussey, who believes the newly appointed head coach brings the ideal mix of tactical sharpness and team rapport to England's red-ball setup. Rather than completely abandoning the team's aggressive identity, Hussey foresees a shift toward a more calculated style, tempering high-tempo cricket with greater adaptability to avoid the costly over-aggressiveness that occasionally plagued the previous era.
