Suryakumar Yadav had led Mumbai Indians in Hardik Pandya's absence.

Suryakumar had a poor IPL 2026 season with bat for MI.

India’s T20 World Cup 2026-winning captain Suryakumar Yadav has sparked a buzz on social media by removing/archieving any Mumbai Indians-related content from his Instagram. Surya has removed MI from his Instagram bio as well. He briefly unfollowed the five-time IPL champions before following them again.

The 35-year-old recent faced snub from the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee. He has been dropped from the T20I squad owing to lack of form.

After reports of Hardik Pandya making up his mind to leave MI, if Suryakumar leaves the franchise as well, it will lead to a massive revamp. The reports also suggested that Tilak Varma is being looked at as the future MI captain after they finished ninth on the IPL 2026 points table under Pandya’s leadership.

Suryakumar had an underwhelming season with the bat. From 13 innings, he scored 270 runs averaging 20.76. His strike rate fell to 147.54, lowest since 2022 edition. He managed just two half-centuries and they ended up in losing cause.

Surya showed signs of return to form in the T20 Mumbai 2026 match on June 6. Against Shreyas Iyer-led SoBo Mumbai Falcons, he scored 48 runs from 24 balls while leading Triumphs Knights MNE. But, his knock ended in a losing cause. In the run chase of 149, India's new T20I captain Iyer scored 61 runs from 36 balls.

How SKY responded to Iyer becoming captain

“Very happy for Shreyas Iyer. We played a lot of cricket for Mumbai and India together. Most importantly 3 back to back T20I captains for India from Mumbai now and it it very proud moment for all of us at Mumbai cricket and everyone needs to celebrate that,” Suryakumar had said at the coin toss.

What’s next for Suryakumar if he leaves MI

After IPL 2026, a few teams are in need of a new skipper. He may look to return to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) where he played four seasons and won the IPL trophy in 2014. Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are in need of a new skipper after Rishabh Pant stepped down. It is not clear whether Delhi Capitals (DC) will continue with Axar Patel after failing to make playoffs again.
