The penultimate over of Delhi Capitals (DC) turned out to be eventful as a well-set Tristan Stubbs was denied a set of fresh gloves by the fourth umpire. DC head coach Hemang Badani and Karun Nair were not happy with the fourth umpire not letting them in the ground. As Stubbs miscued and lost his wicket, he vented out his frustration in the dressing room by throwing his helmet. As the game slipped out of DC’s grasp, one of the substitutes Nitish Rana had a heated exchange with the umpire as well.
In the last two overs, DC needed 32 runs. Stubbs was batting on 60 off 36 balls with Kuldeep Yadav on the other end. Stubbs did not get a change of gloves after he put in a dive to save his wicket and get the strike. After a wide and dot ball, Stubbs went for the big shot but didn't get enough power on it. He was caught at mid-off by Noor Ahmad. It seemed his bat twisted a bit in his gloves under hot and humid conditions of Chepauk.
DC lose wicket in clusters, Samson hits maiden CSK ton
With Stubbs’ wicket, DC’s hopes of chasing down 213 vanished as well. His knock had held DC's run chase together after they lost four wickets in four overs. He lacked support from the other end. David Miller and Ashutosh Sharma showed promise but lost their wickets to Overton and Ahmad respectively.
Earlier, Sanju Samson shrugged off an underwhelming start to the season with his maiden century in CSK colours. Samson scored an unbeaten 115 off 56 balls, featuring 15 fours and four sixes. Ayush Mhatre contributed with a half-century before he was retired out whereas Shivam Dube delivered with an unbeaten 10-ball 20 cameo.
2 defeats in a row, next stop Bengaluru
This was DC’s second loss on the trot while chasing. They were bowled out for 189 in 20 overs by CSK, losing the match by 23 runs. The Axar Patel-led side is currently placed fourth on the points table. Their net run rate (NRR) is still positive. After a week's layoff, DC will go up against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on April 8 at M.Chinnaswamy Stadium.
