There is a serious risk of rain during the Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025) opening match between the reigning champion Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), which is set to take place at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. The Alipore Meteorological Department is not very hopeful about the game because thunderstorms are predicted to hit the entire state in the next few days, including Kolkata.
Thunderstorms and heavy rain forecasted
The event will begin with a magnificent opening ceremony prior to the game on Sunday, March 22, which marks the season opener. However, the supporters' enjoyment is probably going to be ruined by the forecasted thunderstorms and heavy rain.

“Due to the presence of favourable wind pattern & strong moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal at lower tropospheric levels, thunderstorms with lightning and strong gusty surface winds are very likely to occur in some districts of West Bengal during 20-22nd March 2025,” read the IMD bulletin.
A thunderstorm with a 40–50 kmph gust, lightning, hail, and light to moderate rainfall is predicted to occur in one or two locations over the districts of Birbhum, Murshidaman, Nadia, East Bandhaman, North and South 24 Parganas, and East Midnapore, according to IMD.
The supporters are excitedly anticipating the opening ceremony in addition to the cricket action. According to the most recent information, singer Shreya Ghoshal and actor Disha Patani will perform before the game, providing the audience with a ton of entertainment.
