Story Highlights:

Jofra Archer has been rested for the ODI tri-series to manage his workload.

Rehan Ahmed has been dropped from the ODI squad.

England Cricket Board (ECB) on October 1 announced their squad for the ODI tri-series on Pakistan soil which also features Sri Lanka. Injured Jos Buttler has been ruled out of the tri-series whereas Jofra Archer has been rested as part of his workload management. Leg-spinner Adil Rashid has regained fitness and after missing the ODI series at home against Sri Lanka due to a hand injury.

Surprise recall

Leg-spinner Mason Crane who made his T20I debut in 2017 and only Test appearance in 2018 has been picked in the ODIs. Crane has a wicket each in Tests and T20Is. He hasn't been a regular in The Hundred in past three seasons. In 2026 season, he made just three appearances for London Spirit, taking just a couple of wickets. Overall, the 29-year-old has played 50 List A games, bagging 78 wickets at an average of 30.83 including four four-wicket hauls. His economy rate is just over six runs per over in the format.

“Mason Crane has been performing consistently for Glamorgan across both formats during the summer. He’s an experienced, high-class leg-spinner who thoroughly deserves another opportunity at international level,” the men’s national selector, Marcus North said in a media release.

Replacements for injured players

Starting at the top, Tom Banton has retained his place in the side after a century against Sri Lankans. Banton will continue to open in the absence of an injured Jacob Bethell.

Wicketkeeper-batter Buttler will be a big miss in the tri-series. In his absence, Jordan Cox made a name for himself with a 76-run knock in the third ODI series which is also his maiden fifty in ODIs.

Replacing a rested Archer, Sam Curran has returned after recovering from a groin injury. The previous ODI series Curran played was against India where he took six wickets including a four-fer in the series decider.

“The tri-series in Pakistan provides another valuable opportunity for our ODI squad to test themselves against quality opposition in different conditions,” North said.

“Adil Rashid and Sam Curran return to the squad following their respective injuries while Jofra Archer has been rested to manage his workload following a busy summer.”

Will Coles, Crocombe make ODI debuts?

All-rounder James Coles did not get to make his ODI debut against Sri Lanka. Coles has experience of 24 List A games. From 20 innings, he has scored 425 runs at an average of 26.56 and strike rate of 87.26. He has two half-centuries in the One-Day format. The 22-year-old has been handy with his left-arm spin, taking 26 wickets at an average of 32.07.

Crocombe is a right-arm pacer who made his The Hundred debut in 2026 season. The Sussex pacer has played 36 List A games taking 49 wickets at an average of 33.46 featuring two four-wicket hauls. He can contribute as a tailender as well. From 24 innings, he has 203 runs at an average of 15.61 at a strike rate of 85.65. He best with the bat is 47. He made a name for himself earlier this year with two consecutive hat-tricks in County Championships.

Players dropped from ODI squad

Rehan Ahmed and Dan Lawrence are two players who were in the squad against Sri Lanka but won’t feature in Pakistan. Ahmed was unimpressive with the bat as he registered scores of 2 and 0 against Sri Lanka in the ODI series. He claimed three wickets as well. Despite a good record in domestic cricket, he is yet to prove his mettle with the bat in ODIs. So far, he has scored 101 runs from nine ODI innings. His highest score in ODIs is 27.

Lawrence had got an ODI call-up after Buttler was ruled out of the third ODI due to injury. Lawrence had recently been recalled to the Test squad as well but he is yet to make his England debut in either white-ball format. Lawrence does not have a great List A record. From 28 games, he has 670 runs at an average of 26.80 including a ton and four fifties. He has been inconsistent with the bat. With the ball, the part-time off-spinner has 11 wickets at an average of 54.27.

England’s ODI record this year

This will be the first time England will play in an ODI tri-series on Pakistan soil. England have played nine ODIs in 2026 and won six of them. Interestingly, this will be the third time England will be taking on Sri Lanka in an ODI series this year. In January 2026, they had played an ODI series on Sri Lankan soil winning by 2-1. Then, they beat Sri Lanka 2-1 at home last month.

What's at stake for England in Pakistan?

England would look to improve their ODI rankings. Currently, they are ranked sixth and have same rating points as Sri Lanka. Pakistan are placed fifth with 100 rating points. England would look to move past Pakistan and move up in the standings.

England’s ODI record in Pakistan

The last time England played an ODI on Pakistan soil was in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. They lost all three group matches — Australia, Afghanistan and South Africa — which led to Buttler stepping down as captain.

England have played 19 ODIs against Pakistan on the latter's home soil. England have won nine of them and lost 10. The last time England played an ODI against Pakistan in Pakistan was in 2005. They won the match by six runs but lost the series 2-3.
