Nasser Hussain named Andy Flower as his preferred choice to succeed Brendon McCullum as England's Test coach.

Flower boasts an illustrious coaching résumé, including England's 2010 T20 World Cup triumph and back-to-back IPL titles with RCB.

England's Test setup is already witnessing discussions over its future after Brendon McCullum was relieved of his duties as the team's red-ball head coach. While McCullum will continue to oversee England's white-ball sides, his departure from the Test role has sparked debate over who should take charge of the team's next chapter.

Former England captain Nasser Hussain has now thrown his weight behind Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) head coach Andy Flower, calling him the ideal candidate to succeed McCullum.

Nasser Hussain explains why Andy Flower is the perfect successor

Speaking on the subject of England's next Test coach, Hussain said the team requires someone with exceptional attention to detail to work under the new cricketing structure and insisted Flower fits that role better than anyone else.

"If you're gonna have someone like that as your director of cricket, then you need someone that is absolutely across everything and does not miss a trick. And, for me, the best person for that would be Andy Flower by a country mile. Flower took England to number 1 in the world. Flower pushed his team hard," Hussain told Sky Sports

The former England skipper also praised Flower's coaching style, noting that while some believed he occasionally pushed players too hard, the Zimbabwean consistently extracted the best from his teams.

Hussain pointed to Flower's track record of transforming England into the world's No. 1 Test side and described his coaching credentials as among the finest in modern cricket.

Andy Flower boasts one of cricket's most decorated coaching resumes

Flower's coaching achievements make him one of the most accomplished candidates for any international role. During his stint as England head coach, he guided the side to its first-ever ICC trophy, lifting the 2010 T20 World Cup, before taking England to the No. 1 spot in the ICC Test rankings in 2011.

He also oversaw one of England's greatest eras in Test cricket, leading the team to memorable Ashes triumphs, including the historic 2010-11 away Ashes series win in Australia.

Flower has carried that success into franchise cricket as well. As head coach of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), he led the franchise to back-to-back IPL titles in 2025 and 2026. Beyond the Indian Premier League (IPL), he has enjoyed title-winning campaigns across several global T20 leagues, including the Pakistan Super League (PSL), International League T20 (ILT20), Caribbean Premier League (CPL) and The Hundred, further strengthening his reputation as one of the game's elite coaches.
