From the time Shedeur Sanders was drafted by the Cleveland Browns as the 144th pick in the 2025 NFL draft, he found himself receiving unnecessary hate. But even after the hate, Donovan Mitchel always backed Sanders. Now that the rookie has dropped a historic performance in his debut as a starting quarterback, Mitchell is not the least bit shocked.
After featuring in his first game on November 16, Sanders was approved to start just one week later on November 23 against the Las Vegas Raiders. The youngster capitalized this chance by completing 11 of 20 passes for 209 yards along with a touchdown and one interception, guiding Cleveland to a 24-10 win at Allegiant Stadium.
Sanders' performance placed him in the history books, as he became the first Browns quarterback to win his first NFL start since Eric Zeier did it thirty years back, in 1995.
Donovan Mitchell reacted to Sanders' outing after the game.
“I think I'm the most hype in the locker room talking about it,” Mitchell said. “I knew I said before the year started, he (Sanders) was going to start at some point… Then obviously now to see him have a good game, the team wins, that's big time, and just want to show our support."
"He's a talented player and he gets a lot of hate, a lot of unfair criticism, and all that. But man, this is phenomenal, and I hope he has a hell of a career.”
Donovan Mitchell dropped a great performance on Sunday. He registered 37 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists, leading the Cavs to secure their 12th win of the season.
Donovan Mitchell sends warning to the league after scoring outburst
On Sunday, Donovan Mitchell dropped his fifth 30-point performance in his last six outings, pushing his season average to an impressive 30.8 points per game.
After the win, he reminded everyone why he is considered as one of the most dangerous attacking players in the League.
“It’s my job to get a bucket at anytime. I feel like I’m one of the best scorers in the league,” Mitchell said in the postgame interview.
The latest MVP ladder came out on November 21, taking him at #10. Donovan Mitchell clearly did not appreciate that ranking and has been on a mission to prove that he deserves to be much higher, averaging 34.5 points in two games since.
If he maintains this level and the cavaliers continue to rack up wins, fans can expect his name to be right in the center of MVP debates.
