Only 7 teams have qualified.

Some of the playoff positions in the WNBA are still unclear as the regular season draws to a close next week. The playoff situation in each conference is still open as only seven out of 16 teams are already set for the postseason. The Phoenix Mercury – led by 9-year veteran Diana Taurasi, clinched the seventh position and will have to wait for an opponent in the first round.

Playoff seeding

The regular season is coming to a close this Thursday: all twelve teams are certain to put on quite a show. The first playoff game is planned for Sunday.

Two of the teams that are still in contention for positioning are the Indiana Fever who are expected to play against the Connecticut Sun in the first round. For now, the Sun is ranked third in the seed list but their position can change depending on the outcome of the remaining matches. Currently, the Indiana rookie Grace Clark has been remarkable by setting the WNBA single-season assist record and breaking the record formerly set by Seimone Augustus of most points scored by a rookie. The teamwork paid off Sunday when Clark scored a record 35 points to give her 761 for the season, shattering Augustus’ record of 744 points set in the 2006 season.

Final Playoff Spot Battle

The battle for the final playoff spot is equally intense. Chicago Sky, Washington Mystics, and Atlanta Dream are all tied for eighth place. The Dream's victory over the Mystics in overtime on Sunday kept their playoff hopes alive. The Sky, who lost to Phoenix, missed an opportunity to gain an edge. The upcoming games will be crucial: Chicago will face Atlanta on Tuesday, which could be decisive for the final playoff berth. Washington will host the Liberty on Tuesday and then the Fever on Thursday, while Chicago will visit Connecticut on the same night.

Other Contenders

In the Western Conference, the Las Vegas Aces are currently holding the fourth seed. The two-time defending champions are in contention to move up to the third seed if they secure two victories and Connecticut loses both of their remaining games. If Las Vegas remains in the fourth seed, they are set to face the fifth-seeded Seattle Storm.

The Aces currently have a one-game lead over the Storm, and the two teams will meet on Tuesday in Seattle, which could impact their final seeding. As the regular season draws to a close, the final standings and playoff matchups are still to be decided, ensuring that fans can look forward to an exciting finish to the WNBA season. The final games this week will determine the seeding for the postseason and set the stage for the upcoming playoff battles.
