India got the better of Afghanistan by seven wickets in the first ODI

After the match, Shubman Gill reacted to Rohit Sharma's run-out incident

India captain Shubman Gill addressed the horrible run-out mix-up with his opening partner Rohit Sharma during the first ODI against Afghanistan on June 13. Despite the early drama, Gill went on to play a magnificent, match-winning knock of 84 runs off just 66 deliveries, guiding the Men in Blue to a comfortable seven-wicket win in Dharamsala.

The incident occurred during India's pursuit of a 195-run target in a rain-curtailed 25-overs-a-side match. Rohit Sharma had gotten off to a promising start before his innings was abruptly cut short by an all-too-familiar misunderstanding. After nudging a delivery toward mid-on, the veteran opener instantly called for a quick single and committed to the run. Gill, however, stood his ground and loudly yelled "no" multiple times. By the time Rohit attempted a desperate U-turn, Rashid Khan had fired a sharp throw to wicketkeeper Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who whipped off the bails well before Rohit could make his ground.

Given the history of run-outs between the two star batters, the dramatic dismissal naturally became a major talking point after the game. When questioned about the incident during the post-match presentation, Gill quickly downplayed any potential tension in the dressing room. The young Indian captain confidently confirmed that Rohit was not angry about the miscommunication, putting to rest any speculation of animosity between the opening duo.

"He saw the replays and said it's fine, he was run out in the last match too," Gill said at the post-match presentation.

Rohit Sharma's run-out saga

The incident highlighted a recurring pattern of costly miscommunication between the star opening duo. Although Rohit appeared visibly frustrated as he walked off the field, the Men in Blue maintained their composure to chase down the revised target comfortably, with Gill leading the charge via a match-winning, unbeaten knock.

This was far from the first time the pair found themselves entangled in a dramatic mix-up. A remarkably similar disaster unfolded during the first T20I against Afghanistan in Mohali back in January 2024, occurring on just the second delivery of India's run chase. On that occasion, Rohit drove the ball toward mid-off and immediately sprinted hard for a single. Gill, caught ball-watching at the non-striker's end, failed to respond to the call, leaving both batters stranded at the same end and resulting in Rohit being run out for a frustrating diamond duck.

However, Rohit's run-out didn't affect India's chase as after his dismissal Gill took the onus on his shoulder and steered India to a comfortable win in the end. The two sides will now take on June 17 in Lucknow.
