It's only the second day of the high-octane Border-Gavaskar series opener between India and Australia, and a lot has happened already. After having a bad day on Day 1, Australia suffered a major blow on Day 2 as their star batter Matt Renshaw was taken to hospital for scanning after hurting his knee and was absent during the play. Renshaw was seen with a wrapped bandage around his knee as he suffered a knee injury during the warm-up session on Day 2 of first Test.
As cloud of doubt lingers on his return in the first Test, Cricket Australia also confirmed this update via a tweet, stating, “The 26-year-old has been sent for scans after injuring his knee during the warm-up.
Matt Renshaw, who was dismissed for a golden duck yesterday in Australia's first innings on Day 1, has been replaced by Ashton Agar.
Mark Waugh while commentating said, “felt slight soreness in his right knee this morning and is icing it as a precaution, I think he might have injured something behind his knee".
“Hopefully it’s not a major injury for Renshaw. He potentially could have bowled a few overs as well… I hear that he’s been taken to the hospital for precautionary scans or X-rays. That’s the last thing Australia needs,” Mark Waugh added.
Renshaw was called back to the side for the Sydney Test, and despite exhibiting covid symptoms in the moments before the toss and the beginning of the first day’s play, he was kept apart from his teammates for the first few days. After making the shocking decision to bench the batsman of the summer, Head, for the opening Test in Nagpur, Australia’s cricket selection committee is still under fire.
Australia are already missing the services of their star players in Cameron Green , Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood. Losing one more player will dent their chance in the Border-Gavaskar's four-match Test series.
