The in-form Kane Williamson was dismissed for a two-ball duck in the Wellington Test against Australia. The former New Zealand Test skipper was not outfoxed by a bowler but became victim to a collision with teammate Will Young and Australia fast bowler Mitchell Starc. As Marnus Labuschagne rushed to the ball and pulled off a direct hit, Williamson was caught well short of the crease.
The dismissal ended Williamson’s 12-year run-out-free streak in Test cricket. The last time he was run out in the format was in January 2012 against Zimbabwe in Napier. He was run out for a single-digit score. In total, he has been run out only thrice in his Test career. The first run-out dismissal was against Zimbabwe as well.
Phillips, Henry rescue New Zealand after collapse
Before Williamson's dismissal, Tom Latham got bowled by Starc in the fifth over. In the next over, Rachin Ravindra was dismissed by Josh Hazlewood for a three-ball duck. Daryl Mitchell and Young fell cheaply too as New Zealand were reduced to 29 for five wickets in the 18th over.
Glenn Phillips and Tom Blundell's 84-run partnership helped New Zealand recover. Phillips scored 71 runs from 70 balls to help New Zealand get past 150. Matt Henry contributed with the bat too as he smashed four sixes and three fours in his 34-ball 42 to take the hosts' score to 179.
Southee strikes early
Skipper Southee inflicted damage with the new ball dismissing Steve Smith for a three-ball duck and Labuschagne for a single-digit score. Australia were 13/2 at the end of Day 2's play with a lead of 217 in the bag.
Phillips doesn’t blame Starc for run out
"At the end of the day, it was a little bit of a freak accident. If Mitch (Starc) was on a slightly different line, obviously he wasn't in the way on purpose, but if he's on a slightly different line, Kane runs around Youngy, Youngy goes through on his normal line and nothing happens" Phillips told the reporters after the day’s play.
"It was just one of those moments where everything brought together a perfect storm and Marnus unfortunately hit (stumps)," he added.
