Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar criticized the English media during the first day of the second Test against Bangladesh at Green Park, Kanpur. He labeled them as ‘crybabies’ while comparing India all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin's centuries at his home ground, the MA Chidambaram Stadium.
Sunil Gavaskar slams English Media
Gavaskar emphasised Ashwin's ability to score centuries on diverse surfaces. He recalled his own first century in Chennai against England in February 2021, highlighting how he "walked the talk" after the English media heavily criticized the pitch.
"That was on a turning track and this one on a seaming track. He (Ashwin) actually said the previous day in the press conference that you can get a hundred if you apply yourself. So he walked the talk there against England where the moaners were going on saying ‘what kind of wicket is this’. ‘Pitch is awkward’ etc all those you know regular crybaby remarks that we get to hear from the England media," Gavaskar said.
Ashwin's Dominance in Chennai
In his fourth Test match in Chennai, the veteran spinner achieved a dream performance. He scalped 8/96 across two innings, including a five-wicket haul in the first innings. Ashwin's contributions extended beyond bowling, as he also scored a magnificent 106 in the second innings. His exceptional performance with both bat and ball decimated England, and he rightfully earned the Player of the Match award.
Ashwin's love affair with the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai continued in the recent Test against Bangladesh. He registered his sixth Test century, scoring a magnificent 113 runs, and also claimed 6/88 wickets in the second innings. This impressive performance earned him his tenth Player of the Match award. Meanwhile, the first day of the second Test between India and Bangladesh was affected by rain. The visitors ended the day on 107/3. After India's captain, Rohit Sharma, chose to bowl first, Akash Deep struck early, dismissing Zakir Hasan (0) and Shadman Islam (24). Ashwin also contributed with a wicket, dismissing Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto for 31. Mominul Haque (40*) and Mushfiqur Rahim (6*) remained unbeaten at the close of play.
