Often batters are relieved when the DRS goes in their favour but Indian skipper Rohit Sharma wasn’t. In the second session of Day 4 of the second Test at Green Park, Kanpur, Rohit got off to a blazing start as he walked out with intent to score quickly. Rohit smashed two sixes off the first two balls he faced. He helped India break the record for fastest team fifty in Test cricket history. However, one poor decision from Richard Kettleborough halted his momentum.
Najmul Hossain Shanto introduced off-spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz in the fourth over of the innings. He was welcomed by Rohit with a four. After two dot balls, Rohit was struck on the pad. He went for the pull shot but missed the ball. As umpire Kettleborough raised his finger, Rohit wasn’t sure whether to opt for a review or not. After talking to his opening partner Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rohit signalled for DRS.
The hawkeye ball-tracking technology showed that the impact of the ball on the pad was outside the leg stump. As the decision was referred and camera focused on Rohit, he seemed visibly frustrated. He hit the bat on the ground and cussed.
Rohit could not make the most of the reprieve and got bowled by Miraz on the next delivery. He departed for an 11-ball 23 featuring a four and three sixes. He shared a 55-run opening partnership from just 23 balls with Jaiswal.
Bangladesh missed out on a chance to dismiss Rohit in previous over
Earlier, in the third over, Rohit had a reprieve when Bangladesh did not opt for a review. Rohit had edged it to wicketkeeper Litton Das off Hasan Mahmud but noone was convinced other than Miraz. He was batting on 12 runs then.
Rohit’s unique feat
In the second over, Rohit hit Khaled Ahmed for two sixes off the first two balls he faced. The Indian skipper became the fourth batter to achieve the feat in Test cricket. He is also the second Indian batter after legendary Sachin Tendulkar to get the unique record in his name.
