Pakistan cricket is in dire straits across formats. From administration to captains, there have been a few knee-jerk reactions in the past few years. The instability has led to Pakistan getting knocked out of ODI World Cup 2023, T20 World Cup 2024 and Champions Trophy 2025 early on. After India beat Pakistan in a comprehensive manner last month, legendary Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar claimed that an Indian B or C team is capable of beating their senior side. The comment did not go down well with former Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq who has cautioned Gavaskar against making such statements.
“Gavaskar sahab should see stats. He is an elder and senior; we respect him. But when talking about someone's country....your team has played well. You have the right to praise your team. But it's right to say about another team like this. Please be careful with your words, I am saying this in a slightly harsh tone,” Inzamam said on a Pakistani show.
Gillespie unhappy with harsh criticism as well
Before Inzamam, former Pakistan head coach Jason Gillespie had a strong reaction to Gavaskar's comments as well. Gillespie believes that there is enough talent in Pakistan to beat any team in the world..
“I don't buy this rhetoric. I saw some comments from Sunil Gavaskar about the Indian B team or Indian C team would beat the Pakistan top team. That's nonsense. Absolute nonsense. If Pakistan pick and stick with the right players and give them time to shine and, time to learn and develop their games, they can beat anyone. I've got no doubt about that,” the former Australia fast bowler said.
What exactly Gavaskar said?
“I think a B team certainly (can give Pakistan a run for their money). C team, I am not too sure. But a B team will be very, very hard to beat for Pakistan in their current form,” the former India opener had told India Today.
While India had made it to the final of the Champions Trophy 2025, Pakistan made wholesale changes to their limited-overs squads. Pakistan will play a five-T20I series against New Zealand starting March 16 followed by a three-ODI series.
