Suryakumar has been replaying that moment frequently, revealing he's watched the catch countless times, nearly every hour. He expressed immense joy at contributing something extraordinary for his nation. Suryakumar also gave credit to the bowlers, acknowledging their exceptional performance in the death overs, which set the stage for his impactful catch.

“I watch it every hour, whenever I get an opportunity to use the phone, I watch it a lot of times and I'm very grateful. I mean, I could get to do something special, for my country that day. If I would have been busy seeing that the ball would have already crossed the boundary. There were a lot of moments in the game and this was one of them, but reaching to that moment after that 30-ball 30,” Suryakumar said at the India Today Conclave.

“Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep and Hardik, all the three guys getting us back into the game. And then this moment came of 6-ball 16, and being in that moment and taking that catch. I think you can say that there was a lot of hard work involved behind it by all the 3 bowlers, and then I got an opportunity, otherwise the game would have been over long back,” he further added.

South Africa were on the verge of victory, needing only 30 runs from the final 30 balls, when Suryakumar delivered a game-changing moment. His spectacular catch on the boundary rope, dismissing David Miller, dramatically shifted the momentum in India's favor. However, some fans raised concerns, suggesting that Suryakumar's foot might have made contact with the boundary rope during the catch.

The decision was promptly referred to the third umpire, who meticulously reviewed multiple camera angles to ascertain the legitimacy of the catch. After careful examination, the third umpire ruled in favor of the Indian team, confirming a clean catch. With only the tailenders remaining South Africa eventually faced a seven run defeat against India and missed another shot at the ICC trophy.

Following India's title triumph, Suryakumar's leadership qualities were recognised, and he was appointed T20I captain. Under his captaincy, the Indian team has done tremendously well, maintaining an undefeated record in all series since 2024.
