Virat Kohli has been on a record-breaking spree in the ICC Men's ODI World Cup 2023. During his knock in the World Cup 2023 final at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Kohli left Ponting behind on the list of highest run-scorers in ODI World Cup history. Kohli was third on the list before the all-important final clash against Pat Cummins’ side. He became second on the list with a single off Josh Hazlewood's final ball of the sixth over of the innings.

In the seventh over, Kohli hit three consecutive fours off Mitchell Starc. He helped India break Australia's record for fastest team fifty in a World Cup final. Australia created the record in the World Cup 2003 final against India from 42 balls. In Ahmedabad, India crossed the fifty-run mark from 39 balls.
Kohli helped India recover from 81/3 in the 11th over. He reached his half-century from 56 balls in the 26th over of the innings during his partnership with wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul. He was dismissed for 54 from 63 balls in the 29th over. Cummins got his wicket with a slower ball.
Earlier in the tournament, Kohli broke Tendulkar's record for most runs in a single World Cup edition. Tendulkar had scored 673 runs in the World Cup 2023. With a century against New Zealand in the semifinal at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, Kohli went past Tendulkar. Also, he broke Tendulkar’s record for most centuries in ODI cricket history with his 50th ton.
Before the final, Kohli got a gift from Tendulkar. His former teammate gifted him his jersey from the 2011 World Cup final when India beat Sri Lanka at Wankhede Stadium under Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s leadership.
