India capitalised on a time limit offence committed by USA and was awarded five runs penalty during their T20 World Cup 2024 match in New York on Wednesday, June 12. The USA team violated the ICC's new time limit rule, which mandates the bowler to be ready to deliver the first ball of the next over within 60 seconds.
Five-run penalty against India cost USA
After failing to meet this requirement three times, the USA conceded a five-run penalty to India. This occurred just before the start of the 16th over, with India's score at 76 runs and Suryakumar Yadav and Shivam Dube at the crease. The penalty boosted India's total to 81 runs, bringing them closer to their target of 111.
As per the rule:
"If the bowling team is not ready to bowl the next over within 60 seconds of the previous over being completed, a five-run penalty will be imposed the third time it happens in an innings."
Later, India ended up winning the match by seven wickets to make it to Super 8 stage.
India Crush USA, secure Super 8 Berth
India dominated the USA in New York on securing a convincing victory and a spot in the Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup 2024. Left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh starred with the ball, picking up career-best figures of 4/9 to restrict the USA to a modest 110 for 8.
World No. 1 T20I batsman Suryakumar Yadav then led the chase with a brilliant 50 runs, ably supported by Shivam Dube's unbeaten 31. India chased down the target comfortably in just 18.2 overs, with Rohit Sharma's men remaining undefeated.
This win marks India's third consecutive victory, propelling them to the Super 8s from Group A with a game to spare. Their next match is against Canada in Lauderhill, Florida on Saturday. Meanwhile, the USA suffered their first defeat in three games and will need a win against Ireland on Friday to keep their qualification hopes alive.
