Michael Clarke thinks India will be the biggest threat to Australia in T20 World Cup.

While India kick off their T20 World Cup campaign against Ireland, Australia play their opener against Oman.

Michael Clarke believes Team India is the biggest threat to Australia's chances of winning the T20 World Cup 2024 which will be jointly hosted in the USA and Caribbean. Clarke highlighted two key factors that make India such a formidable opponent. Firstly, India's packed cricketing schedule provides them with valuable match practice and keeps them sharp. Secondly, India has experience playing in conditions similar to those expected in the tournament, giving them a potential edge over other teams. This rivalry between India and Australia is no secret. They've clashed in recent major ICC events, with Australia holding the upper hand in both the Test Championship and the 2023 ODI World Cup. The T20 World Cup promises to be another exciting chapter in this cricketing rivalry.

Michael Clarke sees India as the frontrunners for T20 World Cup

While Australia recently dominated India in major ICC events, former captain Michael Clarke sees India as the frontrunners for the 2024 T20 World Cup. He cites India's wealth of experience and a squad stacked with talented spinners as key factors in their favor.

“If you look at the favorites for this World Cup, it’s going to be India. Just because of the amount of cricket that they’ve played, the preparation is outstanding. Conditions are different in the Caribbean and America to India but there’s a lot of similarities so their players will be used to that,” Michael Clarke said on ESPN Around the Wicket.

Michael Clarke delved deeper into his prediction, suggesting India's heavy reliance on spin bowling could be a masterstroke in the upcoming T20 World Cup.  He reiterated his stance that India, with their experienced squad and potent spin attack, poses the biggest threat to Australia's title aspirations.

Clarke Highlights Australia's Potential Achilles Heel

However, Clarke didn't shy away from pointing out potential weaknesses in Australia's camp led by Mitchell Marsh. He specifically addressed the lack of recent match practice for some Australian players compared to their Indian counterparts, who are coming off the intense and competitive IPL 2024 season. This limited game time, according to Clarke, could be a significant challenge for Australia during the World Cup.

“The other thing is that I think that India has taken a risk with the squad that they’ve picked, heavily reliant on spin very different to Australia. But in conditions that I’ve experienced in the Caribbean, I think spin bowling and how you play spin is going to be a big part of your success. So, India is the biggest threat for me in regards to who’s going to win this World Cup. If we’re looking for a weakness, compare this to a team like India where they’re coming from the IPL. I think that one thing’s a lack of cricket that could be one of our weaknesses,” Clarke added.

While Clarke sees India as the biggest threat, Australia will certainly face their own challenges. They've been placed in Group B alongside their arch-rivals England, along with Namibia, Scotland, and Oman.  Their journey begins on June 6th against Oman. Meanwhile, India finds itself in Group A, alongside another arch-rival – Pakistan.  Rounding out the group are Ireland, the USA, and Canada.  India's campaign kicks off on June 5 in New York against Ireland.
