Former India cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin was left in awe of Shree Charani's bowling in the knockout stage of the Women's World Cup and predicted her to become the team's next "superstar". Notably, Charani recorded figures of 2/49 and 1/48 in the semi-final against Australia and final against South Africa respectrively. Even though these figures weren't game-changing, she helped the team in applying the brakes on the run-flow and occasionally also bagged wickets.
Ashwin analyzed the left-arm spinner's bowling action and highlighted how she was able to succeed against the formidable batting orders that came up against her in the mega-tournament.
“Her ball rotation is at the correct speed. If it matches Sophie Ecclestone, Jess Jonassen or Sophie Molineux, her weight transfer. She goes into a lovely side-on position. From there, her hand comes to the front. There is no collapse anywhere. There is no energy leakage,' Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.
“She crushed the World Cup. She is the biggest reason for India to win this World Cup. She is going to be a superstar bowler in the future,” he added.
Ashwin's praise for Harmanpreet
Ashwin further went on to compare the women's cricket team's World Cup triumph to India's victory in the 1983 ODI World Cup and 2007 T20 World Cup. He further went on to say that Harmanpreet Kaur has sown the seeds by taking her side to the triumph just like how Kapil Dev and MS Dhoni did in the past for the men's team.
“The thing is coming from a place like this, Harmanpreet Kaur would have seen a lot of disappointments. The 2017 World Cup final, for instance, where they beat Australia and lost to England in the final. Jhulan Goswami was there. Harmanpreet Kaur has seen such things. She has faced defeats. She has seen defeats from situations where the World Cup could have been won. From outside, you may not be witness to the effort she has put in," Ashwin stated.
“The seed she has sown, after 10 or 20 years, how Kapil Dev sowed it, how Dhoni sowed it in 2011 or 2007, like how we talk about those, we will talk about this as well," he further added.
India's memorable win in the final
Meanwhile, India have now become the fourth team after England, Australia and New Zealand to win the coveted World Cup title. Though the Women in Blue had lost twice in the World Cup final in previous editions, they made sure to not let the painful history repeat itself and defeated South Africa by 52 runs at the D.Y. Patil Stadium to script a historic triumph.
