Touted as the next big thing in Australia cricket, Sam Konstas lived up to the expectations as he scored a century for Prime Minister's XI against India at Manuka Oval, Canberra on December 1. After rain washed out Day 1's play, the match was reduced to 50 overs per side. Later, it became a 46 overs per side game after a brief rain interruption early in the first innings. Konstas who did not get the selectors' nod for Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 revealed how former Australian captain Tim Paine's advice helped him play more freely.
“I’ve been practicing it a little bit with Tim Paine, but yeah, good to get a few away. Tim just told us to have good intent and put pressure on them and treat it like a 46-over game. So I was just trying to keep things simple and just trying to stick to my plans," Konstas told WA Today after India's six-wicket win.
Konstas hopes to face Bumrah one day
In the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, Konstas was not afraid to try a few unorthodox shots or hit the bowler over his head. He forced skipper Rohit Sharma to push the players back. The 19-year-old scored 107 runs from 97 balls including 14 fours and a six. His knock coupled with Hanno Jacobs' 60-ball 61 helped hosts post 240 on the board. Despite the century, Konstas expressed disappointment over not being able to face Bumrah.
“I was watching quite a bit. Bumrah is a skilful player, obviously, and probably the best in the world. Hopefully, one day I can face him and see how we go. I feel confident [in my game]. I’ve been training really hard and it’s a great opportunity to play against the best players," the New South Wales batter said.
Konstas makes a statement with century
Konstas has been making headlines for a few months. He scored twin centuries for New South Wales in their season opener. He was one of the contenders to open the innings in Border-Gavaskar Trophy but Nathan McSweeney was preferred over him. With a century against India, Konstas has sent a message to the selectors. There is a possibility that he may receive his maiden call-up after second Test of the five-Test series.
